A driver was jailed after a fatal wreck in a West Ashley neighborhood early Sunday.
The wreck was in the Grand Oaks subdivision, which is off Bees Ferry Road in Charleston.
The driver, Steven A. Petit, 28, of Francis Younge Way Road in Hollywood, was charged with felony DUI and reckless homicide, police said.
A passenger, Matthew Pieronek, 26, of Charleston, died in the wreck, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
Charleston police responded to the wreck at 12:56 a.m. Sunday on Ashley Gardens Boulevard, spokesman Charles Francis said.
A 2002 GMC pickup truck was westbound on Ashley Gardens from Westwind Drive when the driver lost control, Francis said. The truck left the road, struck a culvert and flipped, ejecting Pieronek, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Francis said.
A backseat passenger was not injured in the crash, Francis said.
Petit was taken to Medical University Hospital with minor injuries, then was booked into the Charleston County jail. He was being held on $60,000 bail Sunday.
