Clowney, a rising junior and the overwhelming favorite to be the top pick in the 2014 NFL draft, is one of three players who will represent the Gamecocks at the SEC Media Days on Tuesday in Hoover, Ala.
Then, according to USC officials, Clowney plans to journey to Los Angeles, where he will attend the 2013 ESPY Awards Show at the Nokia Theater. The show will be broadcast at 9 p.m. Wednesday by ESPN, and hosted by “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm.
Clowney could pick up an ESPY of his own, for Best Play of 2013.
The play in question is Clowney’s stunning hit on Michigan running back Vincent Smith in the Jan. 1 Outback Bowl.
Clowney’s hit is one of eight plays still in the running for the award, which is based on fan voting here.
Clowney’s hit is currently up against a “double save” by Peru goalkeeper Angelo Campos in a soccer match against Uruguay.
The other nominated plays include a 153-foot putt by Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps; a 4th-and-29 run by Ravens running back Ray Rice; an alley-oop dunk by DeAndre Jordan of the Clippers; a goal by Swedish soccer player Zlatan Ibrahimovic; Ray Allen’s 3-pointer to save the Heat in the NBA Finals; and a 55-foot buzzer-beater by high school basketball playr Khalil Edney.
