Trident Health plans to build a $9.6 million freestanding emergency department near the Tanger Outlets Center in North Charleston.
The 12,300-square-foot facility is to be located at the intersection of Tanger Boulevard and Firestone Road, near the outlet mall and the Charleston Area Convention Center.
Trident Health has not announced when the project will break ground.
The state health department said on Friday that it is suspending the Certificate of Need program for one year, giving hospitals permission to expand without restriction. That program has traditionally been used to regulate the number of hospitals and hospital beds across the state.
Pam Brock, vice president of marketing and public relations for Trident Health, said this new project is not affected by that decision because it was previously approved.
The facility will include emergency services, CT imaging and general radiology.
Trident Health is expected to release more details about the project early next week.
