Wando’s Sierra Armstrong named girls lacrosse player of year
Sierra Armstrong remembers the first time she attended a lacrosse tryout. She was confused and couldn’t catch the ball.
“It was an instructional league,” Armstrong said. “My mom pushed me to try new things. I actually stuck with it.”

Armstrong stuck with it and made great strides. She was the goalie for the Wando girls team and played in four Lower State championships and one state championship.
After a successful senior season in which she recorded 145 saves on 253 shots, Armstrong has been named The Post and Courier’s female lacrosse player of the year and heads up the All-Lowcountry team.
Armstrong moved to goalie in the eighth grade because no one else on the team played the position.
“I was just really drawn to it,” Armstrong said. “I figured I was tough enough and I was as tall as the goal. I figured I could be physical enough.”
Her toughness just didn’t include the physical part of the game.
“She was a captain, and she kept the team in line as far as being mentally ready,” coach Jessica Stralkowski said. “She was mentally tough. She always left everything out on the field. You can’t say that about everybody.”
The Warriors won the state championship in Armstrong’s sophomore year.
“It was crazy,” Armstrong said. “At the time, I didn’t realize what an honor it was to be the starting goalkeeper in the state championship.”
Wando managed a 15-13 victory over Riverside in the title game.
“We’ve had great teams,” Armstrong said. “Every team was very competitive, but all the teams were different and had their own style. We had to re-mesh every year, but it was worth it.”
This spring, Bishop England made its first trip to the state championship but came up short in a 15-14 loss to J.L. Mann.
The Bishops have seven players on the All-Lowcountry team: Elena Bosco, Isabel Burnett, Caitlin Greenho, Taylor Kennington, Jordan Mitchell, Cora Petyak and Carolyn Roberts.
Armstong is joined by Wando teammates Kendra Blackstock, Alyssa Smith and Christian Oliver. Hunter Leckonby of Academic Magnet and Karen Grant of West Ashley are the other All-Lowcountry selections.
