A robber hit a 57-year-old man with a handgun as the man browsed a fruit stand Wednesday morning in North Charleston, a police report stated.
Two North Charleston residents were arrested in the incident just before 10 a.m. near Rivers and McMillan avenues.
Tyron Shaquan Washington, 26, of South Rhett Avenue faces charges of armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. He remained this morning at the county jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.
The North Charleston Police Department said Tameka Tashea Dukes, 30, of Mangrove Road drove a getaway car for Washington, so she also faces a count of armed robbery. A magistrate set her bail at $100,000.
Their alleged victim, a resident of Sans Souci Street in Charleston’s Neck Area, intended to buy a watermelon from a vender set up outside an Exxon gas station at 3700 Rivers Ave., the police said.
A young black man walked up to him, and the victim told the police what the robber said.
“Give me something out of your pocket,” the robber ordered, according to the report. “If you don’t have nothing, you’re going to have a bad day.”
The man fished through his pockets and produced an identification card, some business card and a Nokia cellphone. The robber then pulled out a black handgun and used it to hit the man’s head, the man told the authorities.
Such an assault is colloquially known as a “pistol-whipping.”
The man suffered a deep cut, and the robber snatched the $100 cellphone and left the scene in a burgundy car.
Responding to a call for help, police officers quickly found the vehicle and its driver. During a search involving a police dog, they also came across Washington.
The reported victim identified Dukes as the driver and Washington as the robber, the report stated.
The man declined any treatment from paramedics.
