The North Charleston Police Department is investigating a possible rape of a patient at Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health Center in North Charleston by another patient.
The victim, who had taken sleeping medicine, told police her roommate woke her about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and told her she had been raped by another patient while she was sleeping. She said she did not remember the assault, according to the report.
The roommate told police she heard a man in the room, sat up in her bed and saw a “small black male” who she recognized as another patient on top of the victim. She told police he tried to force her to commit a sex act before leaving the room, the report stated.
Detectives are investigating. No arrests have been made.
On Friday, Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health issued a statement that said they are “committed to providing the best possible treatment” to patients and they are cooperating with the investigation.
“Due to strict patient confidentiality and privacy laws, Palmetto Lowcountry is precluded from discussing the specific details of any individual case,” the statement said.
Palmetto Behavioral Health, which specializes in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse disorders, also has locations in Summerville and Florence.
It has been dogged by problems including escapes, fights, and assaults in the last few years.
