June 6: Stand-Up Paddleboard One Design Race Series at James Island County Park. 5:30-6:30 p.m. Join group for some friendly SUPing competition in this new race series. All competitors will use the same board design and gear, provided by CCPRC. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount.

June 6: Yappy Hour with The Bill Show. 4-8 p.m. James Island County Park dog park. Free event Join group after work at the James Island County Park dog park for live music by The Bill Show and beverages available for purchase. Free with regular park gate admission.

June 7: Explore Your Parklands: Old Towne. Pre-registration is required to participate. 9 a.m.-noon. This remarkable 67-acre property neighbors one of the most significant sites in the state, Charles Towne Landing. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount.

June 8, 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30-11:30 a.m. The walk through many distinct habitats will allow group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders.

June 8: Folly Pier Fishing Tournament. 6 a.m.-4 p.m., Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Prizes are awarded for the three largest catches in the Big Fish category and for the largest catch in the King Mackerel category. Pre-registration will end on June 6. On-site registration will begin at 6 a.m. Prizes awarded at 4:15 p.m. Tournaments held rain or shine. For ages 3 and up; an adult chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. June 8: Outdoor TRY IT Adventure Sampler: National Get Outdoors Day! at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Experience outdoor activities such as kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, slack-lining, zip-lining, stand-up paddle boarding, archery and more. On-site registration only. This is not a drop-off program; on-site chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $10 Adult/$5 ages 17 & under.

June 8: Canoeing At Caw Caw: Heritage to Habitat Canoe Tour at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Travel back to the age of rice with this interpretive canoe trip. Paddle through rice fields and canals that now serve as one of the richest wildlife habitats in the Lowcountry. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 8: Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Trips: Rice Canals SUP Tour at Long Savannah. 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Cruise our rivers and marshes and see the Lowcountry from a completely new perspective. SUP from Bulow Landing through the old rice fields that once covered the area, and explore one of our most remote parts of the Lowcountry. Paddle up, then circle back down, all with the tide. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 9: Canoe Programs: Intro to Canoeing at James Island County Park. Noon-2 p.m. Get into a canoe and learn to paddle in a fun and relaxing environment with a partner or on your own. This class will cover basic strokes, safety and technique in a relaxing and enjoyable environment. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 9: Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: ACA Introduction to Kayaking-Level 1 at James Island County Park. 1-5 p.m. Using a variety of boats, this entry-level course teaches you the basic strokes and skills to have fun on the water. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $42/$35 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 9: 12th annual Scouts Day at Whirlin’ Waters. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark at North Charleston Wannamaker County Park. Scouts are invited to sign up for this special day at the waterpark in their honor. New this year, $6 lunch vouchers for you to enjoy your choice of any delicious combo meal offered at the Calypso Kitchen. Registration must be made by June 7. Register online or call 795-4386. June 11: Little Acorns: Story Time under the Trees: “The Acorn and the Oak Tree” by Lori Froeb at James Island County Park. 10-11 a.m. Follow along as an acorn grows throughout the seasons. Nurture your child’s connection to nature with a story and craft project under the trees. This is not a drop-off program; on-site chaperon is required. Age: 3 & up. Fee: This program is free with pre-registration and regular park gate admission.

June 11: How to Belay at James Island County Park. 6-8 p.m. Learn to belay in this abbreviated version of the popular Introduction to Climbing class. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $12/$10 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 12: Summer Entertainment Series: Capoeira Charleston at James Island County Park Edisto Hall. 10-11 a.m. Capoeira is a blend of martial arts, game and dance originating in Brazil. This show is both dynamic and energetic, and is set to traditional music featuring authentic Brazilian songs and instruments. Best suited for ages 3-12. Seating begins at 9:30 a.m. Tickets are limited; pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Fee: $5/$4 CCR Discount/$5 walk-in (if available)/Free: chaperons & children ages 2 & under.

June 13: James Island Bird Walks at James Island County Park. 8-10 a.m. Birding experts will help identify and count songbirds, birds of prey, wading birds, and others found in the park’s diverse habitats. Registration is not required. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: Free.

June 13: Home School by the Sea: Bottom of the Food Chain at Beachwalker Park. 10-11 a.m. Use shovels and strainers on the beach to search for animals to observe and release. Designed for homeschoolers, but all are welcome. A registered chaperon is required for all participants. Age: 6 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 14: Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve Bird Walks. 7:30-9:30 a.m. Birding experts help participants explore the surprisingly diverse north end of Folly Beach. Group will seek out a variety of songbirds, shorebirds and seabirds. Registration is not required. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: Free.

June 14: Challenge Course Open Day at James Island County Park. 3-7 p.m. Join the fun on the High Challenge Course. Experience the excitement of walking across a cable suspended between utility poles and zipping down a 200-foot cable. On-site registration available. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 10 & up. Fee: $12/$10 CCR Discount.

June 15: Shaggin’ on the Cooper at the Mount Pleasant Pier. 7 - 11 p.m. Spend an evening dancing on the scenic Mount Pleasant Pier to live music performed by Shem Creek Boogie Band. Beverages will be available for purchase on-site. Only 800 tickets will be sold for this event. Advance purchase is recommended. In the event of cancelation, tickets will be good for any 2013 Shaggin’ on the Cooper event. Series passes also available. Call 795-4386 for more information. Age: 3 & up. June 15: Intermediate Climbing: Climbing 201: Sport Climbing at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Lead climbing, specifically sport climbing, is the next step after top roping. Skills covered include clipping, falling, belaying and more. Participants must have a current CCPRC Climbing Wall Belay Card and must be comfortable climbing 5.8-rated routes. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $30/$25 CCR Discount

June 15: Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: ACA Kayak Quickstart-Level 1 at James Island County Park. 10 a.m.-noon. Learn about the fun-filled sport of kayaking. During this two-hour hands-on informal program, experienced guides will show you how you can enjoy the local waterways and wildlife from a sea kayak. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount.

June 16: Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series race. 7 a.m., James Island County Park. This 23rd annual run-swim-bike event is the first of a five-race series. The race begins with a 600-yard open freshwater swim in the lake at James Island County Park, continues with a 12-mile bike ride through the scenic paved paths of the park and nearby roads, and finishes with a flat 5K run. June 16: Sea Kayak Instructonal Classes: ACA Essentials of Kayak Touring-Level 2 at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This course will teach beginners to paddle sea kayaks safely and enjoyably on lakes, calm ocean environments and other flat-water settings. Group will cover boats, equipment, safety, plus basic strokes and rescues. ACA-certified instructors will keep an eye on safety while creating an exciting learning environment. Age: 16 & up. June 17-20: Aerial Dance: Introduction to Aerial Silks at James Island County Park. 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aerial dance uses traditional circus apparatuses like silks, hammocks, slings and trapezes as well as objects like ladders, nets, and steel window frames. Performers, while highly skilled in performing tricks, also focus on the transitions and meaning behind the movement. Class begins with stretching and strengthening exercises aided by our aerial silks. Learn, practice and drill basic aerial silks moves. Age: 12 & up. Fee: $60/$50 CCR Discount. June 20: Portable Planetarium: Solstice Celebration at James Island County Park. 4-5 p.m. Without the tilt of the earth, we wouldn’t have seasons. Join group to learn about the time of the year with the longest stretch of daylight and its cultural significance worldwide. Explore the heavens from inside CCPRC’s planetarium. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 21: Moonlight Mixer at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. 7-11 p.m. Dust off your dancing shoes and get ready for summer as shagging on the pier returns. Let loose, breathe in the ocean breeze and dance the night away to the sounds of oldies and beach music classics provided by DJ Jim Bowers. Beverages, food and snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets are limited; advance purchase is recommended. No refunds or exchanges. Photo ID required to gain entry into the event. Participants ages 15 and under can register for this course, but must be accompanied by a registered and paid adult chaperon. This is the perfect after work adventure. Paddle out toward the Stono River with a beautiful sun setting as the moon rises. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

June 22: Alligator Adventure at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 9-10:30 a.m. Search for alligators as we separate fact and fiction on this journey to learn why these large reptiles carry the special title of “keystone species.” A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. June 22: Reggae Concert Series: The Dubplates. 8-11 p.m., James Island County Park. Relax and enjoy an evening of reggae music performed live at James Island County Park. Bring a chair or blanket and rock the night away to live music by The Dubplates. Food, beverages and souvenirs will be available for purchase. Outside alcohol and coolers are prohibited. Advance tickets will not be sold. Band is subject to change. Gates open at 8 p.m.; music begins at 8:30 p.m. Fee: $8; free for Gold Pass Holders & ages 12 & under.
