GOOSE CREEK — A man shot and tied up a store owner during an apparent robbery attempt Monday but surrendered when the SWAT team arrived, according to police.

Police got a call at 6:11 p.m. that something suspicious was happening at the Beer & Tobacco Food Mart at 139 Red Bank Road, Capt. John Grainger said. A customer found the door locked, which was unusual for this time of day, and heard noises inside the store.

Officers arrived, walked around the building, and spotted a man in a room in the back of the store with his hands tied behind his back. He turned out to be the store’s owner, and he told them through the door that a man was inside the store and he had been shot.

Officers called for the SWAT team and shut down Red Bank Road. The man inside the store surrendered after about an hour. The road was reopened, although investigators spent several more hours at the scene.

The store owner was taken to a hospital with wounds to the neck and hand that did not appear to be life-threatening, Grainger said. The man police say attempted the robbery was not identified Monday and had not immediately been charged.

Investigators wanted to question him first before releasing his name, Grainger said.

NOTE: This story corrects an earlier version to clarify that the store owner was the one who was shot and tied up.
