The Battery advanced to the fourth round of the tournament by beating the San Jose Earthquakes, 1-0, Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium.
Charleston captain Colin Falvey provided the game’s only goal on a header in the 73rd minute.
It was the ninth time the Battery has beaten a team from the MLS in U.S. Open Cup play: DC United (1999), MetroStars (2001, 2004), Houston Dynamo (2007, 2008), FC Dallas (2008), Chivas USA (2009), Chicago Fire (2010) and San Jose Earthquakes (2013).
Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake advanced to the fourth-round on by defeating the North American Soccer League’s Atlanta Silverbacks, 3-2, in extra time in front of 9,644 fans at a rainy Rio Tinto Stadium on Tuesday night.
Real Salt Lake jumped out to an early lead, going ahead in the third minute on Kyle Beckerman’s goal.
Atlanta’s Kellen Gulley tied the game in the 87th minute with a goal.
Salt Lake scored twice in three minutes in the first period of extra time before conceding a consolation goal in stoppage time of the second period to down Atlanta 3-2.
Devon Sandoval put Salt Lake up 2-1 in the 98th minute. Khari Stephenson pushed Salt Lake’s advantage to 3-1 a in the 101st minute, slamming a half-volley into the top right corner from 20 yards.
Atlanta midfielder Pablo Cruz answered for the Silverbacks in the 121st minute, curling a ball into the top left corner from eight yards out in the right side of the box.
