Squirrel causes more than 1,000 homes to lose power on Charleston peninsula this morning

A squirrel is the likely culprit behind a widespread power outage in downtown Charleston this morning, a spokeswoman for SCE&G confirmed.

At about 10:15 a.m., only 40 homes in Charleston County were without power, down from more than 1,400 earlier.

The spokeswoman did not know the exact amount of time the outage lasted but said crews responded quickly.

She said the outage was probably caused by a squirrel on a power line.

The outage affected homes on the peninsula.
