At first, I didn't like the idea of linking good deals with Memorial Day. Buying a new television is hardly the best way to commemorate the fallen heroes of this country.
That being said, we all know retailers will use any excuse to boost their sales, and the end of May is, in fact, a good time to take advantage of those deals.
This weekend, you can find major markdowns on almost any commodity, big or small. Here are some examples of what to look for.
Most of the deals listed will expire Monday, so make sure you take advantage of the low prices while they last.
If you've been putting off big electronics purchases, this weekend is the time to go for it. Wal-Mart has some impressive online-only deals on TVs, tablets and laptops. Plus, you can ship most items for free to the store nearest to you.
I had to rub my eyes a few times when I first saw this laptop bundle deal at Wal-Mart.com. You can pick out a laptop, carrying case, printer and USB flash drive all for as low as $312. That's an incredibly low price for the laptop itself, but with the other items, it's a steal.
Some other stand-out items at Wal-Mart.com include a 32-inch LED TV by Sceptre, which is marked down to $189, about $60 cheaper than usual. And the Samsung Galaxy 2 Tablet is marked down $20 to about $180.
Many stores at the Tanger Outlets are running big sales this weekend. Everything is 50 percent off at Aeropostale, 40 percent off at Old Navy and American Eagle, and at Chico's Outlet, everything is 25 percent to 50 percent off.
You can find some cute summer shoes at Nine West, and when you buy one, you can get a second pair for 50 percent off this weekend.
Swimwear is 30 percent off at Lands' End, and sale items at Loft are an additional 40 percent off.
Patio and garden
You'll find extra savings on outdoor items such as lawn mowers and grills. When you shop for lawn mowers, try to go electric. The 12-amp Corded Electric Mower by Black & Decker is on sale for $200 at Home Depot right now, plus it ships for free.
When you buy any lawn or patio items such as lawn mowers, grills or outdoor furniture at Sears, you can take $20 off your order. At Target, you can take $50 off your purchase of patio furniture priced at more than $350.
