— A five-run fifth along with a complete-game gem from senior Audrey Broyles led South Carolina (34-24) to a 5-1 win over Houston (41-20) on Saturday evening at McCombs Field to move to the championship portion of the Austin Regional.

Broyles threw just 81 pitches in the win, scattering four hits and the unearned run while striking out one.

In an earlier game Saturday, the Gamecocks lost to Texas, 11-2. They will face the Longhorns again this afternoon.


Walt Lancaster of Charleston won 14 medals — 13 gold — at the South Carolina Senior Sports Championships held at Francis Marion University in Florence over the weekend.

Winners will participate in the National Senior Olympics in Cleveland in July.

Lancaster, competing in the 70-74 age division, won gold in the 50-meter dash (7.64), 100m (14.99), 200m (31.58), triple jump (21-05.5), long jump (10-07), high jump (3-06), discus (93-06), javelin (109-06), shot put (33-06), 50-yard breaststroke (50.05), 50 butterfly (49.39), 50 freestyle (42.50) and 50 backstroke (61.67). He also won bronze in the 400m (1:27).

College of Charleston junior Alex Ellis and freshman Josh Lorenzetti wrapped up competition in the NCAA men’s golf Baton Rouge Regional.

Ellis carded a 7-over 79 for the final round to finish with scores of 74-78-79—231 (+15) and finished tied for 45th place.

Lorenzetti shot a 12-over 84 for the final round to finish with scores of 77-85-84—246 (+30) and finished in 75th place.
