Youth sailing clinics announced by College of Charleston
The College of Charleston sailing team has announced a series of advanced youth racing clinics.
The three-day clinics, primarily focused on the fundamentals of short-course collegiate-style racing necessary to compete at the elite level in high school and college, will be conducted by College of Charleston sailing head coach Ward Cromwell and assistant coach Mitch Hall.
Students will learn and practice the same drills used in coaching the C of C varsity sailing team in the school’s 18, 420 and 18 FJ fleets. Clinic participants and their chaperons also may stay aboard the aircraft carrier Yorktown, which is berthed adjacent to the College of Charleston Sailing Center at Patriots Point.
Advanced youth racing clinics will be held June 11-13 and July 23-25. The cost is $600 per camper or $200 for nonsailing adult chaperons. Charleston-area sailors can participate at a cost of $450, which does not include housing.
An advanced one-day Laser Racing Clinic will be held July 19. The cost is $110 per participant plus $30 per boat charter on a first-come, first-served basis (the school has eight Lasers). The full-day clinic will be coached by Hall, a former Interscholastic Sailing Association singlehanded national champion, prior to the Charleston Yacht Club Open Regatta.
