Re-zoning meeting on Sgt. Jasper property deferred
The proposal to re-zone the property around the Sergeant Jasper apartment building near Colonial Lake in Charleston and then re-develop it for new four- and six-story apartments has been deferred.
The Beach Co., which owns the land in the area, said it needs more time to present its plans to to area residents, preservationists and historical groups. The re-zoning request was to go to the City of Charleston’s Planning Commission on Wednesday.
The company wants to redevelop several acres of land in the vicinity of Broad Street and Lockwood Boulevard, and demolish the 14-story Sgt. Jasper apartment building that dates to the 1950s.
Currently, up to 300 people live inside the 221 units of the apartment building, including students, professionals and retirees.
