College of Charleston salvaged the third game of its final regular-season Southern Conference series with rival The Citadel today, taking a 7-5 victory before 907 fans at Riley Park.
Cody Martin drove in two runs to back the pitching of starter Matt Pegler (4-2), and Dre Watts pitched two scoreless innings for his sixth save for the Cougars (27-24, 15-11 SoCon).
The Citadel, which won the first two games of the series by identical 7-1 scores, fell to 30-22 overall and 17-10 in the SoCon.
Western Carolina (21-6) clinched the SoCon regular-season title Sunday with doubleheader sweep of Wofford.
Against College of Charleston, Bulldogs starter Austin Mason (3-4) gave up three hits on three runs in the first inning, the key blow a two-out, two-run double by Martin. Mason lasted just 2 1/3 innings.
The Citadel’s Bailey Rush closed the gap to 6-5 with a solo homer in the seventh, but the Cougars scored an insurance run in the eighth on Blake Butler’s two-out single.
College of Charleston hosts Jacksonville on Tuesday, while The Citadel is at Charleston Southern.
