MOUNT PLEASANT — The six seniors on Wando’s girls soccer team are determined to end their careers with a third state championship in four years.
On Friday night, they got plenty of help from the team’s freshmen, who scored three goals in a 4-0 victory over South Aiken at Wando Stadium.
Ranked No. 2 in the state, Wando (18-1-1) advances to the Lower State final on Monday night. The Warriors will travel to No. 6 Lexington, the only team they’ve lost to this season. Lexington claimed a 2-1 victory in the preseason Viking Cup.
“We’re looking forward to going up there and playing them again,” said Wando coach Shannon Champ.
Freshmen Ellen Hayes, Brittany Heri and Lyndi Helland all scored goals, as did senior Melissa McCool. Keeper Logan Nelson recorded the shutout for Wando, which led 1-0 at the half.
“I was really proud to be their coach tonight,” said Champ, who led the Warriors to state titles in 2010 and ’11. “They stepped up in their last game in their home stadium for this year and played one of their better games.
“We’re down some players to injury, and some players who don’t typically get a lot of minutes got a lot of time and played well.”
Hayes and McCool both scored their goals on headers off of corner kicks.
“Those two set pieces were huge,” Champ said. “And we were able to capitalize on some chances when we got forward.”
After winning two straight state titles, Wando lost last year in the final to T.L. Hanna.
“Our seniors definitely want to get the trophy back to Wando,” Champ said.
