If there’s anybody I’d like to spend a fortune on, it definitely would be my mom. Maybe then I’d give her the “thank you” she’s owed for all those birthday parties, sleepless nights and tear-filled chats on the phone.
But if I truly believed that expensive gifts could even the score, I wouldn’t be the woman my mom raised me to be. In fact, she’d probably open those gifts and say, “I hope these were on sale.”
We all want to show our appreciation on Mother’s Day, but it’s OK to stick to a budget. And with so many stores running specials, finding nice things for affordable prices shouldn’t be too hard. Here are some of the best deals I found around town.
Quality pajamas are something we don’t typically splurge on for ourselves, which is why they make such a great gift. At J.C. Penney, sleepwear by designers such as Liz Claiborne, Insomniax and Earth Angels are 40 percent to 50 percent off.
J.C. Penney also had some good deals on handbags, though they aren’t being advertised as part of the Mother’s Day specials. For $20 or less, I found clutches by Liz Claiborne, color block canvas tote bags and even some cute messenger bags.
Jewelry makes for a great gift because it can serve as a keepsake. Many watches on Amazon.com are 70 percent off right now and have free one-day shipping, which means they could arrive by Sunday.
At Belk, fine jewelry is 40 percent to 50 percent off, and fashion jewelry is 30 percent off. Plus, you can find a coupon in the Belk circular this week for $10 off a purchase of $50 or more.
Scented candles are a safe bet for gifts because you can never have too many of them. When you buy a large jar candle, vase candle or tumbler candle from Yankee Candle, you can get a second for 50 percent off.
Barnes & Noble also has some impressive deals for Mother’s Day, with the Nook HD on sale for $149, about $50 less than usual. If your mom prefers traditional print books, you’ll want to check out the collection of books with motherhood themes.
When you buy one of the Mother’s Day books, you can get a second for 50 percent off. Best-sellers now include “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg and “My Beloved World” by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
With the savings you’ll find on gifts for Mother’s Day this year, you could have enough money left over to treat your mom to a nice dinner or a movie. After all, spending time with her probably is more valuable than anything you can wrap up or stick in an envelope.
