May 9: James Island Bird Walk at James Island County Park. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Birding experts will help identify and count songbirds, birds of prey, wading birds and others found in the park’s diverse habitats. Registration is not required. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: Free.

May 9: Pups, Yups and Food Trucks at Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park. 4-7 p.m. It’s a party in the park with your dog. You and your pup are invited to join a group after work for live music performed by Dave Landeo, beverages and food trucks. All dogs must remain on leash. No outside alcohol or coolers permitted. Free event with park admission.

May 9: Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Instructional Classes: Intro to SUP, Level 1 at James Island County Park. 5:30-7:30 p.m. This fun and relaxed class will get you started with instruction on safety and the proper paddling technique that will allow you to progress comfortably at your own pace. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 10: Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve Bird Walk. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Birding experts help participants explore the diverse north end of Folly Beach. Group will seek out a variety of songbirds, shorebirds and seabirds. Registration is not required. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: Free

MAY 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30-11:30 a.m. This walk through many distinct habitats will allow group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms. Walk-in registrations at Caw Caw are welcome. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders.

May 11: Summer Pier Kickoff Tournament at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. 6 a.m.-4 p.m. It’s the kickoff of the summer’s fishing tournaments at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Adult Angler, Lady Angler, Youth Angler (12 and under), Senior Angler (60 and over), and Total Weight of Five Fish. Pre-registration ends May 9. On-site registration begins at 6 a.m. Tournament held rain or shine. For additional information, call 588-3474. An adult chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. May 11: Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: ACA Essentials of Kayak Touring, Level 2 at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This course is designed to teach beginners to paddle sea kayaks safely and enjoyably on lakes, calm ocean environments and other flat-water settings. Boats, equipment, safety, basic strokes and rescues will be covered. Go beyond the Intro to Kayaking class with more focus on rescues and refining strokes. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $54/$45 CCR Discount. May 11: Carolina’s First People: Paddle to Prehistory at Palmetto Islands County Park. 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Walk a nature trail to find native plants and their prehistoric uses. Then, handle artifacts and replicas of indigenous pottery, a bow, arrowheads and more before canoeing Horlbeck Creek. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 12: Family Climbing: Family Belay Lesson at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Children ages 4-13 will climb while parents learn to belay. Children age 14 and up can learn to belay as well as climb. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 4 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount. May 14: How to Belay at James Island County Park. 5:30-7 p.m. Learn to belay in this abbreviated version of our Introduction to Climbing class. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 15, 22, 29: College Days at James Island County Park. Noon-7 p.m. Climbing is a fun way to get into shape and to meet new people. It is also a great social activity. Students with a current ID will receive a free harness and shoe rental with the regular price of admission. Registration is not necessary. Fee: $10.

May 15: McLeod: Plantation to Park: What’s Next for McLeod? Pre-registration is required for participation. 4-6 p.m. Two years after acquiring McLeod and completing the first phase of restorations, examine the progress as the site’s future prospects are discussed. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount.

May 15: Dance under the Stars at Mount Pleasant Pier. 6-8 p.m. People with special needs and their families and friends are invited to an unforgettable night on the pier. Tickets are limited. Advance purchase is recommended. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/$4 CCR Discount/$5 on-site (if available).

May 16: Sensational Seining at Isle of Palms County Park. 5-6:30 p.m. Gain a new perspective on creatures of the surf zone. Anchovy, pompano, kingfish, stingray, crabs and even squid have shown up in our net. Come out to the beach and meet some of your wave-bound neighbors. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 6 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 16: Stand-Up Paddleboard One Design Race at James Island County Park. 5:30-6:30 p.m. Join group for some friendly SUPing competition in this new race series: the BIC SUP One Design Challenge. All competitors will use the same board design and gear provided by CCPRC, for this friendly and fun competition. This series will consist of races during spring, summer and fall. All competitors will be entered into two national drawings for a stand-up paddleboard and a trip to Puerto Rico. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 18: Birding Trips: Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. 7 a.m.-4 p.m. The marshes, forests and impoundments of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge provide incredible wildlife viewing. CCPRC’s birding professionals will lead this quest to find a variety of wading birds, songbirds, and other interesting species. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $21/$17 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 18-19: Wilderness First Aid at James Island County Park. 8 a.m.-6 p.m. This intensive hands-on certification, taught by Wilderness Medical Associates, covers how to deal with medical emergencies in the wilderness, at summer camp, or on the trail. Class supplements lectures with realistic simulations. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $237/$215 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 18: Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: ACA Introduction to Kayaking, Level 1 at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Learn a new sport comfortably and enjoyably. May 18: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 101 at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. This class is designed to introduce you to the world of climbing. Learn about gear, basic knots, technique and how to belay. After completion, you will be prepared to take a belay test upon your next visit to The Climbing Wall. Age: 14 & up. May 18: Shaggin’ on the Cooper at the Mount Pleasant Pier, 7-11 p.m. Spend an evening dancing on the scenic Mount Pleasant Pier to live music performed by the Port Authority Band. In the event of cancellation, tickets will be good for any 2013 Shaggin’ on the Cooper event. Series passes also available. Call 795-4386. Age: 3 & up. May 19: Charleston Sprint Triathlon at James Island County Park. 7 a.m. This 23rd annual run-swim-bike event is the first of a five-race series. The race begins with a 600-yard freshwater swim in the lake at James Island County Park, continues with a 12-mile bike ride through the scenic paved paths of the park, and finishes with a flat 5K run. Athletes may sign up to participate in one or all of five races throughout the summer. Fees start at $55 per race. For more information or to register, visit www.ccprc.com.

May 19: Advanced Climbing Clinics: Climbing 302: Advanced Rescues at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. What do you do when a storm hits and you have to retreat from a route? What do you do if your climber is injured and can’t be lowered? This class will help you handle these scenarios and review basic rescue techniques before going into more advanced scenarios. Participants should have a current CCPRC Belay Card and have taken Climbing 205: Top Rope Rescues or have equivalent experience. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $68/$56 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 19: Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Trips: Folly River and Little Oak Island. 1-4:30 p.m. Paddle through the salt marshes behind Folly Island. You may have done this trip in a kayak, but the stand-up view makes this a brand new experience. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 20-24: Kayak Rolling and Rescues: Introduction to Kayak Rolling at Splash Zone. 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Have you ever wanted to learn how to roll a kayak? Now is the time. Participants ages 13-15 may register for one of these courses, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Age: 13 & up. Fee: $54/$45 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 21: How to Belay at James Island County Park. 5:30-7 p.m. Learn to belay in this abbreviated version of our popular Introduction to Climbing class. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 22: Night Climbing at James Island County Park. 7-10 p.m. Enjoy an evening under the moon at The Climbing Wall. Try your favorite route from a different perspective. May 23: After Work Paddling Trips: Folly River Sunset Tour. 5:30-8 p.m. This is the perfect after work adventure. Paddle, around Little Oak Island at high tide while the sun sets in front of us and the moon rises behind us. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

May 23: Vocalizations for the Visually Impaired at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Join CCPRC’s naturalists to discover who is making noises at night. Blind and visually impaired persons of all ability levels, as well as sighted persons, with an interest in sharpening their listening skills, are welcome. Personal assistants for visually impaired participants are welcome free of charge. A paid and registered chaperon required for participants 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount

May 23: Run to Remember 5K at the Mount Pleasant Pier. 6:30 p.m. start. Kick off the Memorial Day Weekend with an after work 5K road race. An award ceremony with light food and beverages will be held immediately afterward. Online registration will end May 22. Participants ages 10-15 are welcome to register for the race, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon.

May 24: Beachwalker Bird Walk at Beachwalker Park. 8:30-11 a.m. The southwestern end of Kiawah Island is an excellent place to spot seabirds and shorebirds. Group will hike nearly two miles of pristine beach looking for a variety of birds, including raptors and songbirds. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: Free; however, pre-registration is required.

May 24-27: Mullet Hall Open Trail Ride: Memorial Day Weekend Trail Ride at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center. Noon (Friday )-noon (Sunday). Bring your horse, camping gear and supplies for two nights of camping and trail riding on 20 miles of beautiful, wooded trails. The fee includes a stall, one bag of shavings and weekend camping. Using on the water practice and video analysis, ACA instructors will assist you with fine-tuning your paddling skills. May 31: Moonlight Mixer at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. 7-11 p.m. Beverages food, and snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets are limited; advance purchase is recommended. No refunds or exchanges. Photo ID required to gain entry into the event. Participants ages 15 and under can register for this course, but must be accompanied by a registered and paid adult chaperon.
