Arrest made in Mount Pleasant drugstore holdup

Mount Pleasant police believe they have found the man who held up a drugstore at gunpoint in March.

A man with a gun came into the East Cooper Family Pharmacy at 913 Bowman Road about 9:45 a.m. March 25 and demanded several bottles of prescription painkillers, according to an incident report. Police said the man left with hydromorphone (Dilaudin) and oxycodone.

On Tuesday police arrested Arturo Mendones, 36, of Goldenrod Street in North Charleston, and charged him with armed robbery.

He was being held in the Charleston County jail Wednesday on $100,000 bail. His previous criminal record includes convictions for simple possession of marijuana and an open beer container, according to Charleston County court records.

His girlfriend, Sonja Tompkins, 32, of North Shadow Drive in Mount Pleasant, was arrested on three counts of possessing controlled substances after police searched her house Tuesday, according to arrest affidavits.

Police said they found bottles of oxycodone, alprazolam (Xanax) and zolpidem tartrate (Ambien) for which she did not have prescriptions.

Tompkins was arrested first and told police that Mendones had been talking about robbing the pharmacy, and she urged him not to do it, according to the affidavits. She was being held in the Charleston County jail on $45,000 bail Wednesday.
