The S.C. Department of Insurance is hosting a public information session and fielding questions about property insurance this evening in Charleston.
The event, which comes just weeks before the June 1 start of the hurricane season, is being held at The Citadel’s Mark Clark Hall from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Weather, insurance and real estate experts are scheduled to give presentations during the information session.
The event comes just weeks after a team of meteorologists from Colorado State University predicted above-average hurricane activity this year.
The April 10 study called for 18 systems, including nine hurricanes in the Atlantic and Caribbean, this year.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
The Insurance Department’s coastal forum coincides with growing complaints about rising rates for homeowners’ insurance and flood policies.
The department said the hearing will be a good time for consumers to compare coverage and prices to determine the best value.
