East Cooper Medical Center and Trident Health charge more for common inpatient services than other Lowcountry hospital systems, according to data published by the federal government on Wednesday.
For example, East Cooper billed Medicare an average $77,147 for major joint replacement surgery, about 1.5 times the national average in 2011. For the same surgery, Trident Medical Center billed Medicare about $85,672, 1.7 times the national average.
Both Trident Health and East Cooper Medical Center are for-profit hospital systems.
By comparison, the Medical University Hospital billed Medicare an average $48,013 for major joint replacement surgery and Roper billed $36,121. Data for major joint replacement was not available for Bon Secours St. Francis Xavier Hospital in West Ashley or Mt. Pleasant Hospital.
