Charleston to host Grub Crawl
Keeping company with four of the country’s largest cities, Charleston will be the scene of a roving eat-and-drink “Grub Crawl” next month involving 10 restaurants and bars.
Bon Appetit magazine picked Charleston as the third stop in a series of five similar events that also will be held in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami.
“Last year was our first year. We did Brooklyn, we did L.A., we did New Orleans. It just seemed the time was right for Charleston,” says Bon Appetit restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton.
The “crawl” is offered in two parts on June 22, daytime or nightime. Ticketholders will travel to five places on either tour for special food and cocktails or wine. The day’s stops, beginning at noon, are Stars, the Cocktail Club, Xiao Bao Biscuit, The Grocery and Hominy Grill. At night, the stops are Circa 1886, Cypress, the Gin Joint, the bar at Husk and Charleston Grill, and they get under way at 6 p.m.

“The wine and food festival you guys have down there is quickly becoming one of the top festivals of its kind by the caliber of chefs they are able to get. ... And Charleston is one of the few American cities that you can actually walk and go from spot to spot.”
Knowlton says he was here for the festival in March and visits a couple of times a year. “The number of restaurants that are opening of a certain level is pretty incredible, from Two Boroughs Larder to the Butcher & Bee and what Craig Deihl is doing at Cypress with his salumi program. It seemed like a great fit for Bon Appetit, and so we all got behind it.”
