Reports: Davidson to leave SoCon for Atlantic 10 on Wednesday
Just as it began to pull itself together after the departure of its two best football programs, the Southern Conference now faces the loss of its premier basketball team.
Reports surfaced today that Davidson College, winner of the last two and five of the last eight SoCon tournament titles, will announce its move to the Atlantic 10 on Wednesday.
The reports from Sports Illustrated and ESPN took SoCon commissioner John Iamarino by surprise. But they were not denied by Davidson officials, who advised media “to keep mid-morning open” on Wednesday.
“I have heard nothing from Davidson,” Iamarino said this afternoon. “That would surprise me. Other than that, I have no comment.”
The SoCon already is losing football powers Georgia Southern and Appalachian State, with nine FCS titles between them, to the FBS Sun Belt Conference. College of Charleston is heading to the Colonial Athletic Association.
Last week, Iamarino said the SoCon will pay campus visits to Mercer, East Tennessee State and VMI as part of a process that could result in invitations to those schools. Mercer and ETSU, a former SoCon member, are part of the Atlantic Sun. VMI, another former SoCon member, plays in the Big South.
