GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina coroner confirms that a Gaffney couple found dead outside their rural home died as a result of a murder-suicide.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said Sunday that autopsies confirm 74-year-old James Truman Smith shot his 69-year-old wife Doris Marlene Smith in the head, then turned the gun on himself. Both died from single gunshot wounds to the head.
They were found lying in the driveway of their home Friday afternoon by man who had come to get some large rocks.
Fowler says the deaths happened at least a week earlier and the bodies weren’t discovered.
