MOUNT PLEASANT--Tonight’s Class AAAA Lower State softball game was heavy with pitching. Wando featured Danica Newton while the Green Wave countered Taylor Wuerfel in a battle of right-handers.
Both pitchers were full throttle as two of the state’s biggest schools battled. Wuerfel and Newton both surrendered three hits.
In the end it came down to small ball. The Green Wave finally plated a pair of runs on one hit and two errors in the top of the sixth inning to gain a 2-0 victory and end Wando’s 13-game winning streak.
Summerville, 21-7, travels to Bluffton on Monday. Second-ranked Wando, 25-4, travels to White Knoll in an elimination game.
Summerville freshman Anna Gluhosky led off the top of the sixth with a well-placed bunt. The throw to first was high and she raced to second base to start the rally. With one out, Gluhosky advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Taylor Powell reached on an error. Freshman Summer Jenkins plated the other run with a single.
Summerville 000 002 0 --2 3 0
Wando 000 000 0 --0 3 2
