Citadel pitcher Austin Pritcher and shortstop Johnathan Stokes swept the Southern Conference weekly baseball awards announced Monday.
Pritcher, a senior from James Island, was named pitcher of the week after throwing a shutout in a 6-0 victory over Furman on Friday night. He allowed five hits with no walks and six strikeouts, and for the season is 5-2 with a 2.40 earned-run average. His 19 career victories are the most for active SoCon pitchers.
Stokes, a sophomore from Cheraw, was 9 for 15 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and nine RBIs as the Bulldogs went 3-1 last week. He’s batting .301 and has 40 RBIs for the season.
The Bulldogs (27-18, 14-7 SoCon) are at top-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday.
For the second consecutive week, USC freshman left-hander Jack Wynkoop was named SEC freshman of the week.
Wynkoop followed up a solid performance last week with seven scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory at No. 2 LSU in the rubber game of a three-game series at Alex Box Stadium on ESPN. It marked the first series loss by the Tigers this year. Wynkoop never reached a 3-ball count in the entire stint and limited the Tigers, the second ranked offense in the league, to just five hits with no walks. Wynkoop combined with two other Gamecocks for the six-hit shutout.
