Charleston County has about 2,200 full-time employees with an average salary of $43,600.\
The county is the latest group to submit salaries to the newspaper’s Salary Spotlight, an online database of salary information for state and local employees.
Not surprisingly, county Administrator Kurt Taylor is the highest paid county employee with a salary of $180,000. Keith Bustraan, deputy administrator for finance, who earns $156,229, and Sheriff Al Cannon, with a salary of $154,000 round out the top three earners.
Thirty-four employees earn more than $100,000.
About 450 employees, or 20 percent, earn $50,000 or more. State law requires that government agencies report exact salaries for employees in that earning bracket. For others, salaries can be reported in a $4,000 range, such as $38,001- $42,000. That applies to about 1,750 Charleston County employees.
