Former Citadel punter Cass Couey will get a free-agent tryout with the New York Giants at the NFL team’s mini-camp, set for May 11-13.
The Giants could offer Couey a free-agent contract after the tryout, The Buffalo Bills signed five players after a mini-camp on April 16.
Couey, a 6-1, 210-pounder from Tampa, Fla., started four years at punter for The Citadel, averaging 43 yards per kick as a junior and 42.4 yards last season as a senior.
Couey’s chief rival as top punter in the Southern Conference, Appalachian State’s Sam Martin, was drafted in the fifth round of last weekend’s NFL draft by Detroit. Martin averaged 45.9 yards per kick last season.
Couey is the second Citadel player to receive a mini-camp invitation. Defensive end Chris Billingslea will go to camp with Seattle on May 11-13.
Charleston Southern cornerback Charles James will also be at the Giants’ mini-camp. James, a 5-9, 179-pounder from Jacksonville, Fla., made 32 tackles and intercepted two passes for CSU last year, making first-team all-Big South.
