Lexington — Elliot Lance went the distance, scattering five hits, and Zach Paquette added a pair of hits that helped top-ranked Lexington to a 2-0 win over Ashley Ridge in the second round of the District 5 Class AAAA baseball playoffs at Wildcats Field on Friday.
Lexington, which improved to 22-4, plays host to either Ashley Ridge or Lugoff-Elgin in the District 5 championship on Wednesday. The Swamp Foxes fell to 11-13 and play Lugoff-Elgin on Monday in an elimination game. Lugoff-Elgin eliminated Cane Bay, 5-0, on Friday.
In the bottom of the second inning, Paquette and Cameron Matthews walked and an RBI single into left center by Jordan Buster gave Lexington a 1-0 lead.
Nick Ciuffo, who extended his hitting streak to 25 games, and Paquette led off the sixth inning with singles that put runners on first and third base.
Cole McMillan’s sacrifice fly to center scored courtesy runner Brice Kirven giving the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage.
Lance (3-0), making his first start of the season, walked two and struck out seven, including the game’s final two batters with the tying run at the plate.
Ashley Ridge’s James Govan (3-2) was the loser, surrendering two runs on six hits over six innings.
