The West Ashley baseball team gained a big victory and a huge shot of confidence tonight with a 4-3 victory in nine innings over Fort Dorchester in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.

Fort Dorchester scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-1 lead. But Mitch Miggenburg’s team didn’t quit. The Wildcats plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh and starting pitcher David Allen went home a hero with a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

The Wildcats will host Sumter at noon today and the winner will be in the driver’s seat for the District 7 championship.

Allen started the game on the mound, but Miggenburg brought in Jonathan Sabo in the top of the seventh inning. He allowed an unearned run to get the victory. The two pitcchers allowed only six hits.

Ryan Boyle scattered 12 hits and allowed only two earned runs in eight innings. Austin McClung took the loss.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second against Boyle.

First baseman Taylor Oden led off the inning with a single and Connor Wohnig followed with a double to center. Boyle induced Zach Denton to ground to short, but an error brought Oden home.

Boyle got of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyrie Blalock led off with a single down the left field line and John Michael Gibbons singled up the middle. Allen dropped a bunt and beat the throw. But Sabo lined out to second baseman Drew Yoesta who threw to first to get Gibbons on a doubleplay. Boyle got out of the inning when Oden grounded to third.

The Patriots tied the score in the top of the sixth. Yoesta walked and went to second on a sacrifice but. Designated hitter Eurndraus Bryant singled to center to make it 1-1.

Fort Dorchester plated two runs in the top of the seventh when Corey Rawlings hit a deep fly to left field that was misplayed.

But the Wildcats rallied to send the game into extra innings. Allen and Sabo both collected RBI singles.

Allen’s second RBI single of the night came in the fateful ninth inning.
