The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Gallatin, home-ported in North Charleston, seized 2,200 pounds of cocaine worth about $27 million while on patrol in the western Carribean Sea, officials said Friday.

The cocaine was discovered April 18 aboard the 68-foot fishing vessel Manatee, according to the Coast Guard.

Three smuggling suspects and the vessel were turned over to the FBI, according to news reports out of Miami, where the Coast Guard held a press conference on Friday.
