One hundred and forty-one students in kindergarten through the 12th grade from all over the state recently competed in the South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championships in Columbia.
The Pinckney Elementary Chess Team finished with its best performance ever at a state chess competition. Pinckney’s kindergarten-through third-grade team finished as state runner-up in its division, while the fourth- and fifth-grade team won the state championship for the K-5 division.
Cario Middle School also sent a team to the competition for the first time in school history, and the team finished fourth in the state with only three members.
Both teams are coached by local chess expert Stephen Welt and coordinated by Laurel Hill Primary School teacher E.C. Setser.
