A former substitute teacher is accused of having sex with an Ashley Ridge High School student, Dorchester District 2 spokeswoman Pat Raynor said.
The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the allegations, she said.
Sheriff’s deputies charged William Jesse Baber II, 22 of Lancelot Hall in North Charleston, with sexual battery with a student 16 or 17 years of age, an arrest affidavit states.
On Wednesday, a 17-year-old girl told a school administrator that Baber had just had sex with her, even though she told him that she didn’t want to, an incident report states.
District officials learned of the allegations shortly after and the accused man was immediately removed from the district’s pool of substitute teachers, Raynor said. Baber and the student did not have sex at the school, she said.
Each substitute goes through background checks and training before being placed in a classroom, Raynor said.
“The district is cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation,” Raynor said.
