Charleston County School Districts spends more than $420,000 annually to maintain four of the five schools it closed in 2009.
That cost includes the utilities, insurance, maintenance, grounds care and security for the former Charlestowne Academy, Fraser Elementary, McClellanville Middle and Schroder Middle schools. Brentwood Middle was the fifth shut down school, but the building is completely occupied.
Officials still don't know what they will do with some of those buildings, but the future for others is becoming clearer.
