RiverDogs crush Rome Braves, 12-2
Kelvin DeLeon drove in three runs to lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 12-2 rout of the Rome Braves in South Atlantic League play Monday night at Riley Park in front of 4,055 fans.
The RiverDogs (7-4) stayed tied for the lead in the Southern Division with the win over Rome (6-5).
Charleston jumped on Braves starting pitcher Rafael Briceno (0-2) for two runs in the first. The RiverDogs added four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Peter O’Brien’s RBI double and DeLeon’s two-run double to break it open.
Taylor Dugas hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot that made the score 9-0 in the fifth.
Charleston starter Cesar Vargas (1-0) pitched 51/3 innings for his first victory of the season.
The stands were filled with youth baseball players in their uniforms from all over the Lowcountry on Youth Baseball Night.
Charleston right-hander Rafael DePaula (0-1, 5.68 ERA) faces Rome RHP Mauricio Cabrera (0-1, 4.70 ERA) at 7 p.m. today. It will be Two-for-$20 Date Night. The deal includes two tickets, two slices of pizza, two sodas and one popcorn all for $20.
