Palmetto Brewing Co. is doubling down.
The 20-year-old upper peninsula business took delivery Wednesday of three new fermentation tanks that will boost its beer-making capacity to about 8,000 barrels a year, up from 4,000 now. The gleaming new vats will provide “a long-needed bump” on the production side, the Huger Street company said this week.
“This expansion is both critical and exciting,” spokesman Chris Winn said in a statement. “We have struggled to keep up with the growing local demand for our beers, and this will give us the needed liquid.”
The metal tanks were made in Oregon. Palmetto Brewing began the installation process Wednesday as a crane gently lowered the cylindrical containers into the building through a new skylight.
Excluding a seasonal offering, the Charleston-based company brews four varieties on Huger Street — a pale ale, an espresso porter, an amber and a lager.
“This expansion will also allow us to make different beers and add to our current lineup,” Winn said.
The Palmetto Brewing name dates back to the 1850s.
It was revived in 1993 by Ed Falkenstein and Louis Bruce, who were early pioneers in South Carolina’s modern craft beer business.
Falkenstein remains an owner along with new partner and beverage industry veteran Edwin Pearlstine, the onetime distributor of Anheuser-Busch products along the South Carolina coast.
Demand for craft beer has been growing in the state.
Locally made brews now make up more than 5 percent of the suds market in South Carolina, which is now home to a dozen breweries, including five in the Charleston area.
At least one of those, Coast Brewing in North Charleston, is tapping into the crowd-funding website fundingcharleston.com to raise $40,000. It wants to add a tap room and increase its brewing capacity to 10,000 barrels a year, from 900.
