Developers continue to target student housing
Private developers say the dearth of student housing in the Charleston region is sparking a lot of interest to build for the need.
There’s already a 42-unit student apartment complex being built on 1.17 acres at Meeting and Reid streets downtown. That project is planned to be done in time for the fall semester. On its heels could be a six-story student housing apartment complex on a long-vacant plot at Morrison Drive and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge off-ramp. That project is awaiting city approvals.
There could be even more on the horizon since Charleston-based developer Ecovest Development has voiced interest.
Jeffrey Roberts, managing partner at Ecovest, said the firm has interest in building some student apartment developments, but he stopped short on details due to ongoing negotiations.
Ecovest is largely known in the Charleston region for historic renovations and urban in-fill construction. The firm transformed the historic property at 145 St. Philip St. into a 15,000-square-foot, 26-bed luxury student residential housing complex.
