First, the American Red Cross decided to scale back the hours of its on-campus blood donation center at the Medical University of South Carolina from three days a week to two days a week. Now, it's decided to close the center altogether.

The Red Cross confirmed that today will be the last day the center will accept blood donations in Room 279 of the main hospital.
“The blood donation center at MUSC will be closing due to changing hospital facility needs,” said April Phillips, a Red Cross spokesman.
“It was a mutual decision between the Red Cross and MUSC and was not tied to a decline in blood donations at the site. The blood donor community at MUSC remains committed to helping save lives through blood donation.”
The Red Cross will continue to operate blood donation centers in West Ashley and Mount Pleasant, she said.
“While the current Red Cross blood supply is sufficient to meet the needs of area hospitals, it's important to remember that there is a constant need for blood.
Most healthy individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood every 56 days.”
A spokeswoman for MUSC could not confirm how the space occupied by the blood donation center will be used in the future.Mount Pleasant Donation Center
