The Storybook Farm middle and high school equestrian teams again are headed to Syracuse, N.Y., and the Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Finals.
Both teams won their divisions recently in the Zone 4 regionals in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to qualify for the nationals for the second straight year. Last year, the middle school riders won the national title while the high school team finished sixth overall.
“I’m overwhelmed, I really am,” said coach Alicia Story, who said the accomplishment is a credit to the Charleston equestrian community.
“It’s the other barns and the other trainers who coach these kids on a weekly basis and do such a great job preparing them. I only see these riders twice a month,” Story said. “What I give them is an opportunity to compete in the IEA. What I am most proud of is that this team has brought so many Lowcountry riders together, riders that would never have crossed paths. ... I think it’s made our Charleston-area riding community a little closer knit.”
Story said there are 232 teams from South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida in Zone 4, but only 12 from the high school and 12 from the middle school qualified for the Zone 4 championships.
The high school team won its division with 28 points out of a possible 49, while the second-place team finished with 17 points.
The middle school team, led by Anna B. Morrow, who had firsts in fences and flat in Team Future Intermediate, scored 23 points out of a possible 35, seven points higher than the runner-up.
The National Finals are scheduled April 19-21 at the New York State Fairgrounds.
