Venus Williams still has star power. The 32-year-old star and 2004 Family Circle Cup champion was on the marquee on a cool and threatening night on the Billie Jean King Court. But that didn’t stop the crowd or Williams, who is making her sixth appearance in Charleston.

Williams defeated Monica Puig 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. A crowd of 6,9969 braved the elements and applauded and cheered Williams.
Her play Wednesday was in contrast to the Sony Open in Miami when she had to withdraw before her third round match against Sloane Stephens.
In other matches Wednesday, No. 2 seed and 2011 champ Caroline Wozniacki had little problems with Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Jelena Jankovic, the 2007 champ, rallied for a 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 victory over French qualifier Caroline Garcia.
Lucie Safarova, who was runner-up last year, topped Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 7-5, 6-2.
American Madison Keys topped Grace Min 6-4, 6-3.
