A West Ashley man says he spotted his stolen car Sunday morning being driven by the same man he bought it from off craigslist, according an incident report from Charleston police.
The owner of the 1999 Buick Park Avenue told police he tried to follow it but backed off after the driver pointed a gun at him.
The owner called police, who stopped the stolen car a few miles away and arrested the driver.
Devante Antwan Pittman, 20, of Orleans Road, was charged with receiving stolen goods, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and second-degree assault and battery. He is held in the Charleston County jail on $17,130 bail.
The owner reported last week that the car was stolen in North Charleston. He was driving to a soccer game through the Ardmore neighborhood in West Ashley Sunday morning and spotted the car, according to the report. He said he recognized the driver as the same man who sold him the car.
The car’s owner said he followed the Buick onto Acadia Road, where the driver pointed a black semiautomatic gun out the door. No shots were fired or words exchanged, and the owner left the area and called police.
The owner described the Park Avenue and the driver and said two or three other men were also in the car.
Police stopped the stolen car a few minutes later at Belgrade Avenue and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. Pittman was in the car alone, according to the report. A search of the car did not turn up a gun.
The license plate also turned out to be stolen from a woman who lived on Savage Road, and police returned it to her, according to the report.
