S.C. State University names president finalists

Three finalists have been named for president of South Carolina State University.

Thomas J. Elzey

Current position: Executive vice president for finance, administration and operations, The Citadel

Past positions: Chief financial officer and treasurer at Drexel University; senior vice president and chief financial officer and other positions at Howard University

Education: Bachelor of science in economics, Bradley University; master of science in public management and policy, Carnegie Mellon University

The university’s presidential search committee has forwarded the names to the university’s Board of Trustees, the group that ultimately will decide who will be the school’s next leader.

Leonard A. McIntyre

Current position: Interim dean of the College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences and director of the Textbooks and Learning Materials Program, South Carolina State University

Past positions: Special assistant to the president for international affairs, interim vice president in the Division of Research and Economic Development and interim president at S.C. State University; deputy superintendent of education for the state of South Carolina

Education: Bachelor of arts in Spanish, Loyola University; master of arts in teaching, Spanish and reading specialist, Tulane University; doctorate in educational administration, Iowa State University

The finalists are Thomas J. Elzey of The Citadel; E. Newton Jackson of the University of North Florida; and Leonard A. McIntyre of South Carolina State.

E. Newton Jackson

Current position: Associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs, University of North Florida

Past positions: Professor and department chairperson and associate professor/professor and associate dean for academic affairs, Florida A & M University; assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, Howard University

Education: Bachelor of science in leisure studies, University of the District of Columbia; master of science in sport administration, Grambling State University; doctorate in education, University of New Mexico

Notably absent from the list is Cynthia Warrick, the university’s interim president. Warrick had applied for the permanent position and had the support of many students on the Orangeburg campus.

The finalists next week will participate in interviews with the board and meetings with stakeholder groups. The board will vote on who will take the reins after those meetings, but a date has not been announced.

Board Chairman Walter Tobin said in a news release that the search committee reviewed applications from 25 candidates, then narrowed the list to seven, from which it selected the three finalists. The final seven applicants were screened by a private agency.
