April 7: Lowcountry Cajun Festival at James Island County Park. Noon-6 p.m. Cajun Fest is a full-day of Zydeco music, Cajun and Creole foods, children’s activities and more. Sign up for the 2:30 p.m. crawfish eating contest. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. No coolers, outside beverages or pets permitted. Admission: $10 for adults (13 and up); free for children 12 and under and Gold Pass holders.
April 13-14: Pet Fest 2013. Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Pets, their owners and the whole family are invited to take part in a weekend full of exhibits, demonstrations, experts, rescue groups and entertainment. April 19-21: East Coast Paddlesports and Outdoor Festival at James Island County Park. For a daily schedule, visit www.ccprc.com/outdoorfest. This newly expanded 23rd annual event is a full weekend immersion in the history, technique, hands-on experience and fun of canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and all things outdoors. New this year is the Try It Zone, where you can try your hand at outdoor activities including slacklining, archery, climbing and more. Register in advance for access to paddling classroom lectures, unlimited boat demos from the world’s leading manufacturers, social opportunities with the world’s top instructors, on-water classes and paddling trips. April 27: Where the Wild Things Run 5K. Caw Caw Interpretive Center, 8:30 a.m. Explore your wild side on a scenic run through the trails. Online registration will end April 26. Participants ages 10-15 are welcomed to register, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Fee: $34/$28 CCR Discount.
April 28: The town of Mount Pleasant Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival. Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park and the Mount Pleasant Pier, 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. The festival features a boat parade and ceremonial blessing of the shrimp and fishing fleet, plus seafood samplings from local restaurants, live music, an arts and crafts show, shag dancing and shrimp-eating contests, and family-friendly activities. May 4: Splash Island in Mount Pleasant, Splash Zone on James Island, and Whirlin’ Waters in North Charleston open for weekends only in May. Visit www.splashparks.com.

April 11: James Island Bird Walks at James Island County Park. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Birding experts will help identify and count songbirds, birds of prey, wading birds and others found in the park’s diverse habitats. Registration is not required. A chaperon is required for ages 15 and under. Free.
