N.C. deputy to return to work at jail after road-rage video
The North Carolina deputy who resigned following a YouTube posting of a road-rage clash with a Summerville man is back on the job with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office, but as a jailer.
Chad Walton, 32, of Summerville, tangled with Onslow County Sheriff's Deputy Craig S. Culpepper on I-526 last week. The deputy cut in front of Culpepper and hit his brakes, causing the two cars to bump.
Walton posted a video of the clash on YouTube, where it has been viewed more than 1 million times.
Walton told The Post and Courier that he posted the video because the deputy should be held accountable for what he called erratic driving.
Culpepper, 47, of Jacksonville, N.C., resigned last week and issued a public apology for his behavior on his Facebook page.
The sheriff told Culpepper he could continue to work as a deputy in the detention center, and Culpepper accepted that offer Wednesday, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office.
Walton said Culpepper was holding up traffic in the left lane of I-526 when he came up behind the deputy's cruiser.
“I flashed my high beams at him. I could see him yelling at me in the side-view mirror,” Walton said.
Walton is seen passing the cruiser on the right. Then the cruiser is seen pulling alongside Walton, speeding up and pulling in front of Walton, then hitting the brakes.
Culpepper braked suddenly, causing Walton's car to hit the cruiser, according to a North Charleston traffic collision report. No citations were issued to either driver. The deputy was shown as contributing to the accident, according to police spokesman Spencer Pryor.
Culpepper posted an apology on his Facebook page. He said he was driving home from a 40-hour K-9 handler-training course on Edisto Island when he “allowed another person to manage my emotions and I made a very bad decision.”
When reached Wednesday, Walton declined comment about Culpepper's reassignment.
