Goose Creek police said a woman who reported that her baby was pistol whipped is behind bars accused of making the story up.
Karsen Ruffin, 19, of Ladson, is charged with filing a false report, Goose Creek Police Capt. John Grainger said.
Ruffin told police that she listed an Apple iPad for sale on the Internet site Craigslist. Then, a young woman Ruffin had just recently met arranged for the iPad to be sold to some men she knew in a Goose Creek parking lot.
Instead of buying the iPad, Ruffin told police one of the men stole the tablet computer, and another demanded money and twice struck her 11-month-old child in the face or head with a handgun.
Police now say that no gun was involved and that reports of the child being struck were false.
Ruffin is being held at the Berkeley County jail is in currently awaiting a bond hearing, Grainger said.
