The child killed in a North Charleston collision Monday afternoon was Tylia Hicks, who would have celebrated her fourth birthday this weekend, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
She died Monday night at Medical University Hospital, hours after being thrown from the back seat of a pickup truck in which she was riding, as it crashed and rolled, according to police.
The truck had side-swiped another vehicle, then hit a utility pole and flipped shortly after 4 p.m. near the intersection of Spruill and Clement avenues, police reported.
On Tuesday, North Charleston Police Department spokesman Spencer Pryor said the accident is still under investigation and there has been no “determination as to whether or not the child was restrained in a car seat.”
An accident report released by police said the truck was driven by Tylia’s father, 33-year-old Tyrone Hicks, of North Charleston. He and front-seat passenger Amanda Hicks, 35, who is Tylia’s mother, were injured in the wreck and taken to MUSC for treatment.
