A 1-year-old boy was hospitalized Monday after his baby sitter beat him with a broom, Charleston police said.
The child’s 34-year-old mother told police that she noticed several bruises on her child when she picked up her two sons from their baby sitter.
The baby sitter, Madeline Mikell, 43, of Reid Street, told the woman she should take the child to a hospital, but did not give a reason why, an incident report states.
The mother asked her 3-year-old son what happened to his younger brother, police said. He told his mother that another woman, Deesonia Smith, 30, of North Charleston, beat the boy with a red broom, according to the report.
Upon further questioning, Mikell confirmed the boy’s story, police said.
The mother then beat Smith with the broom so she’d feel the same pain her son had to feel, she told police. She transported her son to Medical University Hospital for treatment, police said.
Smith is charged with inflicting great bodily injury upon a child and Mikell is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, police said.
Both women were held at the Charleston County jail.
