Citadel wrestler Khishignyam goes 2-0 at NCAAs; Delaney is 1-1
Citadel wrestler Ugi Khishignyam won his first two matches at the NCAA Championships Thursday, taking a big step toward All-America status.
Bulldogs heavyweight Odie Delaney also won his opening match at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. But in his second match, Delaney was pinned by defending NCAA champ Anthony Nelson of Minnesota in the second round, dropping to the consolation bracket.
Khishignyam, seeded No. 6 at 141 pounds, took a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech’s Zach Neibert tonight. The redshirt freshman from Mongolia opened the day with a 6-3 win over Lehigh’s Anthony Salupo.
Delaney, a redshirt senior, got an overtime takedown for a 7-5 win over Evan Knutson of North Dakota State in his first match.
The Citadel’s Matt Frisch lost his opening match 10-3 to Iowa’s Derek St. John, the No. 2 seed at 157 pounds. Frisch drops to the consolation bracket.
The championships continue Friday and conclude with the finals Saturday night. The top eight finishers in each weight class earn All-America honors.
