Downtown Summerville is about to get a new pub.

Caleb Taylor of Summerville will open Homegrown Brewhouse at 117 S. Main St. on the square March 30.

The 4,000-square-foot business will be open six days a week after 11 a.m. and offer 40 taps, including several South Carolina-based beers. It will offer pretzels, beer floats and desserts made with beer from the nearby Hummingbird Cafe. The pub will be open until 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and until midnight Thursday through Saturday.

Moving off King

Bartons Toys, Candy and Gifts, one of King Street's oldest businesses, has moved to 728 S. Shelmore Blvd. in Mount Pleasant's Shelmore Village, next to Bi-Lo. The shop has been in business since 1964, and in its new location will continue to carry candy and a wide selection of toys. It had been at 327 King St. And moving from 329 King St. is The Silver Puffin gift shop. It recently relocated to 43 Broad St. in downtown Charleston. The shop was on King Street for 16 years. Erastus Corning is the owner of both shops.

Moving in

GNC is moving into Mount Pleasant Towne Centre. The health store will move into the former Vitamin World space at 1325 Theater Drive by early July. Vitamin World closed Feb. 28.

Under renovation

Bessinger's BBQ at 1602 Savannah Highway had a water line break recently, and its dining room is undergoing renovations. The drive-thru is open, and the buffet will reopen at 5 p.m. Friday. The dining room should reopen in a week or two. Also, Steve Madden shoe shop at 287 King St. in downtown Charleston is closed for renovation. Look for a reopening soon.

Silver lining

Copper Penny will celebrate 25 years in the Charleston area with three trunk shows at 311 King St. in downtown Charleston during Fashion Week.

Trina Turk will set up a display of spring fashions today. On Friday and Saturday, clothes and shoes from designer Diane von Furstenberg will be at the store and at Copper Penny Shooz at 317 King St. And on Saturday, The Milly collection by Michelle Smith will be on display.

Copper Penny will offer refreshments, special discounts and a gift with a purchase.

Hopping in

The Easter Bunny has arrived at Citadel Mall. Kids can have their photos taken at Center Court through March 30. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The mall will be closed on Easter. Go to for more information.
