Seafood Summit brings industry up-to-date
Local seafood folks gathered Tuesday to learn more about their industry, from shellfish to clams to shrimp.
“This is an industry that is dear to the hearts of a lot of Lowcountry folk,” said Cynthia Tarvin of Mount Pleasant, whose family owns the 35-foot shrimp trawler Miss Paula. Nearly 85 people attended the fourth annual Seafood Summit, coordinated by the S.C. Seafood Alliance, a nonprofit that serves consumers and the seafood industry. They represented the industry from production to just before the consumer, said Alliance Executive Director Frank Blum.
Alvin Taylor of the state Department of Natural Resources gave the keynote address. The event included updates on wild-caught fisheries, shellfish, freshwater aquaculture, shrimp gear and more. There also were talks on marketing and how the industry is changing.
“We probably have the least amount of experience of anyone in the room,” said Tarvin, whose family has been in the business since November 2011. “We have one season under our belt, so I came to learn about marketing seafood, catching it, and all that goes with it.”
